Description:Menu from The Cheesecake Factory, a family restaurant with a number of Valley locations as of 2015: Westfield Topanga Mall, Woodland Hills; and Sherman Oaks Galleria, Sherman Oaks. The menu is from the Marina del Rey location, which opened in 1983. In 1972, the family that would open the Cheesecake Factory was running a wholesale bakery in Woodland Hills. In 1978 their son David Overton opened the first Cheesecake Factory in Beverly Hills. The chain is still very popular today. [show more]

Description:Menu from The Cloud Restaurant, a steakhouse located at 12178 San Fernando Rd., San Fernando. This menu clearly says “The Cloud”, but newspaper articles and advertisements call this location “The Clouds.” In 1964, a previous restaurant at this location (Paul’s Bonanza) went bankrupt and was sold. Mike Azar turned it into the Cloud/Clouds, which offered nightly entertainment in the “Orbit Lounge,” including the Four Jokers. By early November 1967, it had gone out of business and was the new Moose Lodge Hall, clubhouse of the San Fernando Valley chapter of the Loyal Order of the Moose. [show more]

The chain began in the 1960s, probably in Orange County, and had locations in LA, OC, Bakersfield, and Hawaii. It is currently unknown whether it’s the same as the Jolly Roger chain that exists today. [show more]

Description:Menu from Twain’s Restaurant, a family restaurant located at 12905 Ventura Blvd., Studio City. In the 1950s-1960, this address was a couple of car dealerships (Al Herman’s T-Birdland). By circa 1965, it was a Denny’s franchise with a classic boomerang roof. It was a Denny’s as late as 1972, and probably even later (the Newspapers.com archive of the Van Nuys News and Valley News ends in 1977, and contains no mention of Twain’s). In the original Denny’s building, Twain’s remained open until late 2014, when it closed for “two weeks of renovations” and has not reopened since. According to Roadarch.com, it is slated to become a Sharkey’s Mexican Grill. [show more]
